Icelandic Honeymoon: slideshow, photos
Allison and I traveled counter-clockwise around the island on the ring road, starting in Reykjavík on March 26, 2010. We saw countless waterfalls, glaciers, lagoons, rock formations, horses, and fjords. We bathed in geothermal water every chance we could get. Also, you can see the 66 photo highlight set on my flickr

The Best Rhubarb Pie, courtesy of my mother
Rhubarb is in season, my friends! Grab some from your nearest farmer’s market or steal some from your next door neighbor’s garden and MAKE THIS PIE. There are few things that I will, with full certainty, claim to be “the best,” but this recipe of my mother’s is one of them. Rhubarb is terrifically sour - but if we’ve learned anything from our other sour...

I basically love cooking and eating scallops
This is a lunch that I mostly made a couple of weeks back. I say mostly because Allison made the tomato-mozzarella salad. I just love cooking scallops—those little buggers are so damned tasty!

Potatoes in garlic mayonnaise
This is a good recipe, but perhaps a bit heavy handed with the garlic. Posted so I remember. 1.5 pounds of salad potatoes 3/4 cup mayonnaise 6 cloves garlic, mashed to a paste or put through a garlic press 4 tablespoons minced parsley Lemon Juice Salt Boil potatoes in salt water until tender, peel and cut into 3/4 inch chunks. In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, garlic, and parsley. Mayonnaise...

Kidney stone, impending doom, narcotic bliss
I was driving downtown on 290 yesterday morning in order to pick up a coworker for a meeting in Barrington when lo and behold the most excruciating and unforgettable pain came upon me. About 3 years ago I had a kidney stone, so I was pretty sure that I was having another one. Rather than driving to the meeting, I drove straight to Northwestern and checked into the emergency room. Firstly, I...

Lions and tigers and cougars, oh my!
A friend of mine just shared   this mp3 of a terrible horrible ridiculous radio spot for a dating site aimed at cougars and the objects of their affections… er… cubs? It’s worth a listen if you want a good, incredulous chuckle. “It sounds like a parody, but it’s not,” another friend observed. Funny stuff. The other night I saw an ad for a show called Cougar...

My trusty margarita recipe, SECRETS REVEALED
Chris asked me for the recipe today, and since I took the time to write it out I thought I would post it here so I never have to write it out again ever. Above is a photo that Felix took of me serving Chris one of these margaritas a few years ago at the office. For as long as I can remember drinking i’ve used a fail-safe margarita pitcher recipe that is easy, delicious, strong, and...

Water rockets? Don't mind if I do!
Yesterday, Emmett made a water bottle rocket in Cub Scouts. It looked like so much fun that i just had to investigate making my own launcher. There are a ton of great resources out there, and I plan on making a trip to the hardware store for materials in the next week so we can have a long wonderful summer of making and launching rockets. ScienceToyMaker.org has the most comprehensive...

This Ain't S#@t, a mixtape
I have failed (so far) to compile my “best of” list for 2009, but this last week had me working on a mix CD for one of those big happy mix exchange things that gets coordinated over the internets. This particular mix consists of 17 songs, 1 hour of diverse ages and styles. It was fun making a mix for somebody I don’t know because it freed me up to just pick great songs without...
